03 Dec Making Bulletproof Coffee with Ghee
It’s Sunday and all I’ve got on my mind is GHEE. What’s all the fuss about? What do you mean it’s not butter? C’mon what a load of bulls**t… It can’t be healthy for you, can it?
I’ve heard it all BUT today I’m finally putting on my big girl boots & giving ghee a taste. I swear by MCT Oil and have been religiously having Bulletproof XCT Oil in my morning coffee for over a year now. It really gives me the energy and focus to kickstart my day without the awful side effects of sugar.
Earlier this year I heard about Bulletproof Butter Coffee, a recipe that combines Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil (an optimised MCT/XCT Oil) with grass fed butter and coffee but being lactose free I had not been game to try it. Then I figured why not substitute butter for the lactose free ghee and finally pop my ghee cherry.
Now, when choosing your ghee always opt for “grass-fed” – which means the cattle were allowed to forage & graze for their own fresh food, replicating their natural primal diet. If you’re a carnivore like me this is also my choice for purchasing beef. In terms of what ghee to use it’s always great to educate yourself about local products on the market – I’d recommend FAT: Ghee Made by Pepe Saya as I love the nutty flavour (& I just kinda dig the label design, it’s uber bold & modern!).
What are the benefits of ghee? I’ll be brief: a) It’s easily digestible so superb for gut health, b) assists with inflammation & immune function & c) It has been linked to the improvement of IBS.
So there are a lot of positives. Not to mention if you gravitate towards a more paleo/primal/ketosis approach to health & wellbeing this is a product you may already be familiar with.
To make a Bulletproof Ghee Coffee, all you need to do is brew your coffee, place it in a blender, add a teaspoon of your chosen MCT Oil (I use Brain Octane Oil for an extra boost) and add a teaspoon of ghee. Blitz in the blender for at least 30 seconds and you will start to see a creamy frothy layer appear…then bottoms up!
This was my first time, and I am converted. I absolutely loved the taste. That beautiful frothy crema holds all the essential oils & the combo has this smooth, nutty, earthy richness that I just totally dig. I have never been a “milk” with coffee drinker, the Italian in me loves coffee bitter & black but this is a whole other world of flavour that I am jumping onboard with.
